My Writing Process

My writing style leans heavily on outlining and plotting. Before beginning the story, I generally decide how it will start (the murder) and how it will end (the killer is caught). Next, I work on the steps the detectives take to uncover motives, secrets, and lies to reach the truth. I don’t begin writing the story until I’ve ironed out each step and have a solid outline. Now, the story may change because the characters, bless their hearts, may take you in a different direction. That’s fine. Just adjust the outline and keep writing!

In the beginning, I also write detailed character sketches for the victim and the killer to explain why their relationship reached such a drastic point that murder was the only option—at least in the killer’s mind. The victim’s life must be fleshed out and other possible suspects identified so as to keep the detectives (and readers) guessing.

My advice to mystery writers is to read many, many books and short stories in the genre. Read first to absorb the conventions and tropes. Then, read and note down what, in your opinion, works and what doesn’t. If you like something, chances are your readers will like it as well. Next, read books or articles (or watch videos) specifically about the craft of mystery writing or writing in general. Always be curious and always be learning.
